Winter service software compared – what really matters?
The market for winter service software is growing – and the differences between providers are large. What must good winter service software really be able to do? And what should owner-managed businesses with 5–30 drivers pay particular attention to?
Why use software for winter service at all?
Many businesses still work with paper route books, WhatsApp groups and handwritten log books. That works – until it doesn't. A sick driver at 4 a.m., a vehicle that won't start, a change in the weather that throws everything off. In those moments it is decided whether a business reacts professionally or descends into chaos.
The main problem: Without software, all the knowledge sits in the dispatcher's head. Routes, sites, special details – all verbal or on paper. That makes the business dependent on individuals and prone to errors when someone is unavailable.
The key features compared
Not all winter service software solutions are the same. These features are crucial:
1. Digital log book & documentation
The core feature of any serious solution. GPS stamp, timestamp and photo documentation must work automatically – with no extra effort for the driver. In a claim, this is the decisive difference.
2. Driver app for iOS & Android
Crucial: the app must run on all devices – not just the latest iPhone. Many drivers use older Android devices. An iOS-only app excludes part of the workforce.
3. Real-time coordination & replanning
The underrated feature. When a driver drops out or the weather changes, the dispatcher must be able to react immediately. Redistribute routes, inform drivers – without a single phone call. That saves not only time, but nerves.
4. Route planning & site management
Store sites with all the details: area measurements, grit, special features, sketches. That way every driver knows immediately what to expect – even stand-ins who don't know the route.
5. Offline capability
Winter service often takes place in areas with poor mobile coverage. The app must work offline and synchronise data as soon as a connection is available again.

What owner-managed businesses should pay special attention to
Large enterprise solutions with long rollout projects and expensive consultants are not suitable for small and medium winter service businesses. What really counts:
- Fast setup: At most 1–3 days until the first job
- Ease of use: Drivers must understand the app without training
- Fair pricing: Licence-based per driver – scales with the business
- Industry knowledge: Software from developers who know winter service from their own experience
The decisive difference
Generic field service software can do a lot – but it wasn't built for winter service. Lensus grew out of 30 years of winter service experience and knows the requirements from the inside.
